Mourning in the Iliad

In the Iliad there are two major places that I can recall where people are mourning, there is people mourning after the death of Patroclus and the death of Hector.  Though they are both mourning someone who died in battle there are some differences in how I as a reader reacted to their death and funeral.  The difference between their deaths to me was that Hector died because he was greedy and went further into the Achaean’s camps he should have while Patroclus tried to fight a battle he was told he shouldn’t, but they both died because of a mistake in their judgment.  Though Patroclus and Hector both get a funeral they are both slightly different.  For Patroclus’ funeral it is more like it is Achilles funeral rather than Patroclus because we all know that he will soon die.  While Hector’s was like it was a funeral for the city because without Hector Troy had no chance of survival.  In both funerals there was a funeral pyre which for Hectors funeral it represents what is going to happen to Troy, but Patroclus’ illustrates Achilles burning rage towards Hector.  Though when you think about both funerals they are very similar they both have different meanings which can be interpreted.
